Building A Concrete Candle

Building A Concrete Candle

Over the past few months we've been working on crafting a candle that embodies our design principles. We went into it knowing that we were going to make a natural, clean, and evocative smelling candle in a vessel that compliments the fragrance. I think we've achieved just that.

The candle is fondly named after the turrets of a castle wall: The Crenel Candle

After a lot of experimenting and iterating we decided the candle vessel needed to have thick walls to give it a weighty feeling but also allow the crenel openings to be emphasized. The base of the candle has a felt lining to protect the surfaces it sits on and to give it a reliable and satisfying thud when you put it down. The wax is currently a coconut/soy blend to give a clean burn while avoiding the natural deformations that occur with 100% soy wax. For fragrance, we've hand selected a whole host of natural essential oils and fragrance oils to make a woody, smokey and yet light and sweet aroma that grounds any space in warmth. Think clove and tobacco but also cedar and oud. We decided to call the fragrance "Blast Furnace." An ingredient in concrete is made using blast furnaces and the way the light of the candle flame bounces around the concrete looks like a red hot...blast furnace. As for the wick we are finishing up testing wicks but the most aesthetic wick is the cross wooden wick exhibited above.

We'll be launching this candle soon so keep an eye out and if you have any thoughts we love to hear them.
